Practicum in Family Therapy - Medical Science 707.01 and 707.02

Duration

  • Medical Science 707.01 is offered in the fall semester (Sept-Dec) and Medical Science 707.02 is offered in the winter semester (Jan-Apr).

Purpose

  • To orient the intern to the concepts and methods of systemic family therapy and to assist the intern in developing specific clinical skills in systemic therapy.

Program Description

  • Clinical caseload with live and videotape supervision. Each intern is expected to treat a wide range of families and is assigned a primary supervisor who is a full time family therapist on staff.
  • Reflecting team opportunities including a weekly in-depth clinical consultation interview.
  • The Family Therapy theory course 706 is a pre-requisite or co-requisite of the practicum for both terms (706.01 in the fall & 706.2 in the winter).
Admission Requirements
  • Proof of registration in, or graduation from, a masters or doctoral program, including a transcript of marks.
  • Curriculum vitae.
  • Letter of intent indicating objectives for the experience.
  • Two letters of recommendation from persons who are able to comment on candidate's present clinical expertise and potential.
  • Interview to be arranged after the above requirements have been met.

Fee (subject to change)

  • When registered as a graduate student in the University of Calgary, Medical Science 706 and 707, course fees must be paid to U.of C. These are approximately $600 for one semester and $1200 for two semesters for each course. Thus both theory and practicum course fees are $1200/semester for Canadiand students (fees for non-Canadian students are usually double).
  • For those who choose not to register in the Medical Science Course, the fee is $1000 per month.

Applications will be processed as received. Early application is advised, as the number of internship positions is limited.

Non-credit Training in Family Therapy

  • The Calgary Family Therapy Centre occasionally considers individual requests for training outside of the Medical Science course. These experiences must be negotiated with the Program on an individual basis.

Calgary Family Therapy Centre Staff
Calgary Family Therapy Centre

Purpose

  • To provide an in-depth exposure to the methods of systemic therapy (for families, couples and individuals) as practiced in the Calgary Family Therapy Centre at The University of Calgary.
  • To invite externs to examine their own and others' assumptions about the nature of mental problems (including problem behavior, psychological symptoms, and emotional distress) and to recognize the ongoing process of social construction of meaning that is involved.
  • To foster alternative "ways of knowing" in clinical situations that increase therapeutic possibilities in patterns of practice.
  • To deepen cognitive understanding and to enhance experiential awareness of systemic process, co-constructing practices, and larger contextual issues (including sexism, heterosexism, ethnicity, racism, classism, and professionalism).
