Practicum
in Family Therapy - Medical Science
707.01 and 707.02
Duration
- Medical
Science 707.01 is offered in the fall semester
(Sept-Dec) and Medical Science 707.02 is offered
in the winter semester (Jan-Apr).
Purpose
- To
orient the intern to the concepts and methods of
systemic family therapy and to assist the intern
in developing specific clinical skills in
systemic therapy.
Program
Description
- Clinical
caseload with live and videotape supervision.
Each intern is expected to treat a wide range of
families and is assigned a primary supervisor
who is a full time family therapist on
staff.
- Reflecting
team opportunities including a weekly in-depth
clinical consultation interview.
- The
Family Therapy theory course 706 is a
pre-requisite or co-requisite of the practicum
for both terms (706.01 in the fall & 706.2
in the winter).
Admission
Requirements
- Proof
of registration in, or graduation from, a
masters or doctoral program, including a
transcript of marks.
- Curriculum
vitae.
- Letter
of intent indicating objectives for the
experience.
- Two
letters of recommendation from persons who are
able to comment on candidate's present clinical
expertise and potential.
- Interview
to be arranged after the above requirements have
been met.
Fee
(subject to change)
- When
registered as a graduate student in the
University of Calgary, Medical Science 706 and
707, course fees must be paid to U.of C. These
are approximately $600 for one semester and
$1200 for two semesters for each course. Thus
both theory and practicum course fees are
$1200/semester for Canadiand students (fees for
non-Canadian students are usually
double).
- For
those who choose not to register in the Medical
Science Course, the fee is $1000 per
month.
Applications
will be processed as received. Early application is
advised, as the number of internship positions is
limited.
Non-credit
Training in Family
Therapy
- The
Calgary Family Therapy Centre occasionally
considers individual requests for training
outside of the Medical Science course. These
experiences must be negotiated with the Program
on an individual basis.

Purpose
- To
provide an in-depth exposure to the methods of
systemic therapy (for families, couples and
individuals) as practiced in the Calgary Family
Therapy Centre at The University of
Calgary.
- To
invite externs to examine their own and others'
assumptions about the nature of mental problems
(including problem behavior, psychological
symptoms, and emotional distress) and to
recognize the ongoing process of social
construction of meaning that is
involved.
- To
foster alternative "ways of knowing" in clinical
situations that increase therapeutic
possibilities in patterns of
practice.
- To
deepen cognitive understanding and to enhance
experiential awareness of systemic process,
co-constructing practices, and larger contextual
issues (including sexism, heterosexism,
ethnicity, racism, classism, and
professionalism).
